Roberto Terzano è professore ordinario di Chimica Agraria presso il Dipartimento di Scienze del Suolo, della Pianta e degli Alimenti (Di.S.S.P.A) dell'Università degli Studi di Bari "Aldo Moro".

Laureato in Chimica nell'a.a. 1998-1999 presso l'Università degli Studi di Bari. Abilitazione professionale alla professione di Chimico (2000). Nel 2001, ricercatore a contratto presso l'Istituto di Orticoltura e Colture Industriali (I.O.C.I.) del C.N.R. di Tito Scalo (PZ). Dottore di Ricerca in Chimica Agraria nel 2005 (XVII ciclo) presso l’Università degli Studi di Bari. Vincitore del premio di Dottorato della Società Italiana di Chimica Agraria nel 2005. Nel 2004 e nel 2005, Marie Curie Fellow presso il MiTAC (Micro and Trace Analysis Centre) dell'Università di Anversa (Belgio). Dal 2006 al 2020 è stato ricercatore a tempo indeterminato nel settore AGR/13 (Chimica Agraria) presso l'Università degli Studi di Bari. Dal 2020 al 2024 è stato professore associato di Chimica Agraria presso l'Università degli Studi di Bari. 

Attualmente docente di “Elementi di Chimica”, “Biochimica Agraria e Nutrizione delle Piante" e “Biomass and wastes characterization” presso il Di.S.S.P.A dell’Università degli Studi di Bari. Componente del Collegio dei Docenti della Scuola di Dottorato in "Scienze del Suolo e degli Alimenti" dell’Università degli Studi di Bari. Responsabile scientifico del "Micro X-ray Lab" presso l'Università degli Studi di Bari. Associate Editor della rivista scientifica internazionale "Environmental Science and Pollution Research". Autore di più di 350 pubblicazioni di cui 116 su riviste internazionali indicizzate. H Index: 31 – Numero Citazioni: 3800 (Fonte Scopus).

L'attività scientifica riguarda diversi aspetti della Biochimica Agraria e della Chimica del Suolo con un particolare interesse rivolto all'impiego di raggi X per lo studio di matrici di interesse ambientale e agroalimentare e alla biogeochimica degli elementi in traccia nel sistema suolo-pianta. Svolge attività di ricerca con luce di sincrotrone presso l'European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) di Grenoble (Francia) e Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) di Amburgo (Germania).

E’ attualmente Past President della Division VI "Chemistry and the Environment" della IUPAC, di cui è stato Presidente nel 2022-2023.

Full Professor of Agricultural Chemistry at the Department of Soil, Plant and Food Sciences of the University of Bari "Aldo Moro". Formerly Associate Professor from 2020 to 2024 and University Researcher from 2006 to 2020.

Master in Chemistry (a.y. 1998-1999). Professional habilitation for the profession of Chemist (2000). Research Collaborator at the Institute of Horticulture and Industrial Cultures of C.N.R., Tito Scalo (PZ) (2001). Ph.D. in Agricultural Chemistry (XVII cycle) (2005). Winner of the First Prize of the Italian Society of Agricultural Chemistry for the best Ph.D. thesis in 2005. Marie Curie Fellowship at MiTAC (Micro and Trace Analysis Centre) of the University of Antwerp (Belgium) (in 2004 and 2005).

Presently teaching "General and Inorganic Chemistry", “Organic Chemistry”, “Agricultural Biochemistry and Plant Nutrition” and “Biomass and Wastes Characterization” at the University of Bari. Component of the College of Teachers of the Ph.D. Course of "Soil and Food Sciences" at the University of Bari. Project Leader and Research Unit Leader in National and International Research Projects. Scientific Manager of the "Micro X-ray Lab" at the University of Bari. Associate Editor of “Environmental Science and Pollution Research” journal (Springer Nature). Speaker in several National and International Conferences. Invited speaker at International Meetings and for Seminars in Italy and abroad. Convener and Chairman of several Scientific Sessions in International Conferences. Referee of International projects and of several International Scientific Journals. Author of more than 350 publications, including 116 papers in indexed international journals. H index: 31 – Number of citations: 3800.

His scientific activity concerns research topics in various fields of Agricultural Biochemistry and Soil Chemistry with a particular interest to the use of X-rays to study environmental  and agrofood matrices, and the biogeochemistry of trace elements in the soil-plant system. Involved in research activities with synchrotron X-rays at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble, France) and at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY, Hamburg, Germany).

Presently Past President of IUPAC Division VI "Chemistry and the Environment" of which he has been Division President in the biennium 2022-2023.
