Your stay in Taranto

Taranto is the third largest continental city in southern Italy (after Naples and Bari), a beautiful coastal city of about 200,000 inhabitants, the capital of the province of Taranto (one of the six provinces of the Italian region of Puglia) and located in the homonymous Gulf that represents the highest point of the Ionian Sea in the Mediterranean Sea.

The city of Taranto is about 75 km from Bari, about 58 km from Matera (2019 European Capital of Culture), about 79 km from Lecce (center of the “Salento” area), about 255 km from Naples, and about 429 km from Rome.

The city is well-known for being bordered by two seas: the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo (you can see the map here), and in ancient times it was the only colony of Magna Graecia founded by the Spartans. You can read about the history of the city here.

In the evening, especially on weekends, the city becomes vibrant with bars, restaurants, and meeting places for younger people (here are some tips). From May to September, the city and the surrounding area offer a number of beaches for swimming and sunbathing (here).
