Abstract in inglese |
The aim of this study was to evaluate tear secretion in dogs treated with some popular sedative drugs: acepromazine, dexmedetomidine and the combination of acepromazine and methadone. All drugs were administered intramuscularly. Ofter performing a complete ophthalmologic examination tear secretion was evaluated before drugs administration (T0) and thereafter at predetermined times within 24 hours. With all the protocols a significant reduction of tear secretion was observed already at 20 minutes after the drugs administration as compared with T0 value. The reduction of tear secretion was more severe with the combination of acepromazine and methadone up to 4 hours after their administration. In conclusion the three sedative protocols tested in this study are all able to reduce tear secretion in the first 2-4 hours after their administration. |
