Second-year, English-language L11 students are offered a two-hour language lesson and a language-laboratory session once a week. So, in conjunction with timetable commitments, you can choose to either attend lessons in Aula 14 or on Microsoft Teams on Mondays or in Aula 11 or on Microsoft Teams on Tuesdays. All language-laboratory sessions and tutorials will be conducted online.

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text1 (Missing Apostrophe in Facebook Post Lands a Man in Defamation Court) to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2020-21) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to either take it along to lesson or  to have it at hand for lesson on line on Monday 18th October or on Tuesday 19th October.

Given that so many students were unable to join lessons on line on both Monday  and Tuesday last, Text 1 will be used in lessons on Monday 25th October or on Tuesday 26th October. Students are also asked to have completed Grammar Unit 1 (Past time), Unit 2 (Present perfect) and Vocabulary Unit 1 (Travel and holidays) and Unit 2 (Work and employment) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN before attending lesson.

Students are asked to read Advice on summary writing, to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams, and then to write a summary of Reading Comprehension Text 1(Missing Apostrophe in Facebook Post Lands a Man in Defamation Court). This summary should be sent for correction in an attachment on a Word document to patrickgerard.carroll@uniba.it by Tuesday 2^nd November. Students are also asked to have completed Grammar Unit 3 (Future time) and Vocabulary Unit 3 (Sport and leisure) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN).

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text 2 (Oxford college installs plaque calling Cecil Rhodes a ‘committed colonialist’) to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to either take it along to lesson or to have it at hand for lesson on line on Monday 8^th November or in Aula 11 on Tuesday 9^th Nov. All students are asked to have completed Grammar Unit 4 (Present time), and Vocabulary Unit 4 (Clothes and appearance) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN).

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text 3(Cutting tuition fees may not be the best way to help students afford university), to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to either take it along to lesson or to have it at hand for lesson on line on Monday 15^th November or in Aula 11 on Tuesday 16^th Nov . Students are also asked to have completed Grammar Consolidation 1, in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN) and Reformulation Practice A, also to be found below in ‘Materiali’ and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams.

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text 4 (The Poland-Belarus border crisis is what happens when humans are treated as weapons), to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to take it along to lesson either on Monday 22nd Nov. or Tuesday 23^rd Nov. Students are also asked to complete Grammar Unit 5 (Indirect speech) and Vocabulary Unit 5 (Towns and buildings) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN).

NB Following instructions from the rector's office, lessons can be held online only if every place in the 'Aula' has been booked -  leaving those unable to book obliged to follow lessons online - or if there are 'studenti in categoria fragile', who can only join lessons online.

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text 5 (Award-winning American poet Robert Bly), to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to have it at hand for lesson online on Monday 29th Nov, 17.20-19.00. or to take it along to lesson on Tuesday 30th Nov. Students are also asked to write a summary of Reading Comprehension Text 2 (Oxford college installs plaque calling Cecil Rhodes a ‘committed colonialist’). This summary should be sent for correction in an attachment on a Word doc. by Tuesday 30^th November. Given that summary writing is a step-by-step learning process, any student who has not yet written a summary of Text 1 should do so and send their work for correction before attempting a summary of Text 2. The same applies to any student that has been asked to re-do their summary of Text 1. Grammar Unit 6 (Conditionals) and Vocabulary Unit 6 (Vehicles and transport) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN) should be completed before joining or attending lesson.

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text 6 (Prince Charles has acknowledged the ‘atrocity of slavery’), to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to take it along to lesson either on Monday 6^th or Tuesday 7^th Dec. Students are also asked to have completed Grammar Unit 7 (Wishes and related forms) and Vocabulary Unit 7 (Food, restaurants and cooking) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN).

Students are asked to complete Reading Comprehension Text 7(Birds aren’t real and this man wants the world to know), to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to have it at hand for lesson on Tuesday 14^th December. Students are also asked to have completed Grammar Unit 8 (Passives) and Vocabulary Unit 8 (Shops and shopping) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN).

Students are reminded that they should have completed Grammar Consolidation 2, Units 5-8, in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN) and Reformulation Practice B, which can befound below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams. Students are asked to complete Translation 7(La Regina, Elisabetta II e la sua vita intrecciata con la Storia globale) to be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams and to have it at hand for lesson, either in Aula 14 on Monday 2nd May or on line on Tuesday 3rd May.  Students are also asked to have completed GrammarUnit 20 (Making comparisons) andVocabularyUnit 20 (Word skills 2) in First Certificate Language Practice (English Grammar and Vocabulary - 4th edition - with key; Michael Vince, MACMILLAN), and to write a summary of Reading Comprehension Text 5 (Award-winning American poet Robert Bly), which should be sent for correction in an attached Word doc. to patrickgerard.carroll@uniba.it by Tuesday 10^th May. Given that summary writing is a step-by-step learning process, any student who has not yet written a summary of Text 1, Text 2, Text 3 and Text 4 should do so and send their work for correction before attempting a summary of Text 5.

Students are asked to read the text from the June 2021 written exam (The poem that is channelling India’s anger about the pandemic) and then highlight the key words. After doing so, the text should be summarized in just one sentence, which would serve as the opening to a more detailed summary. This should be ready for discussion either in lesson in Aula 14 on  Monday 9^th May or in the lesson on line on Tuesday 10th May, which will be held at 11.30, finishing at 13.30 . Students are also asked to complete the Italian-English translation from the June 2021 written exam (Professionisti e dirigenti stranieri) and to identify what aspects of language and translation may be assessed in this task. Students are also asked to complete Reformulation Practice E. The reading comprehension text and the passage to be translated can be found, along with Reformulation Practice E,  below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams.

Students are asked to read the text from the Septembr 2021 written exam (How street art is helping young migrants paint a brighter future in Italy) and then highlight the key words. After doing so, the text should be summarized in just one sentence, which would serve as the opening to a more detailed summary. This should be ready for discussion either in lesson in Aula 14 on  Monday 16^th May or in the lesson on line on Tuesday 17^th May . Students are also asked to complete the Italian-English translation from the September 2021 written exam (Addio a Gaia Servadio, una vita tra romanzi, saggi e documentari) and to identify what aspects of language and translation may be assessed in this task. Both the reading comprehension text and the passage to be translated can be found below in ‘Materiali’ (a.a. 2021-22) and in the ‘Materiale del corso’ folder on Microsoft Teams.
