The Jean Monnet Module CLIMOVE-U (CLImate Migration GOVernance: Legal Protections for Environmental Displaced Persons in the European Union) addresses climate-induced migration within the EU, considering both internal displacement and migration from third countries. Despite climate change’s impact, EU legal frameworks like the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) and the Asylum Qualification Directive lack specific protections for individuals displaced by climate-related factors. While some Member States provide humanitarian protection, there is no standard approach across the EU. CLIMOVE-U aims to fill this gap by exploring the legal, policy, and human rights dimensions of climate migration. Its goals include enhancing legal knowledge through a comparative methodology, promoting interdisciplinary education, and fostering policy innovation. The module encourages dialogue among academics, policymakers, legal practitioners, and civil society to develop solutions aligned with the European Green Deal, the Global Compact for Migration, and the Paris Agreement. It bridges key Erasmus+ priorities, including the fight against climate change and the promotion of inclusion and diversity. The project offers specialized courses, legal simulations, workshops, and a Legal Clinic on strategic litigation. It also raises awareness of climate migration as a human rights issue, empowering students and professionals to advocate for legal reforms. CLIMOVE-U will create a website as the main hub for project information, research outputs, and legal resources, including a database of climate displacement cases. It will produce academic publications, policy briefs, and a Global Atlas on Climate Migration Policies, offering tools for legal practitioners and policymakers. By integrating education, research, and advocacy, CLIMOVE-U strengthens the EU’s role in climate migration governance, promoting more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable migration policies within and beyond the EU.
