Quantum-Enhanced Magnetometry at Optimal Number Density

Researchers from the University of Bari have contributed to the demonstration of quantum enhancement of an optical magnetometer by using squeezed light

The work has been experimentally carried out at ICFO- The Institute of Photonic Sciences and published in Physical Review Letters. The technique has been applied in a high-density regime with an atomic number density of up to 10^13 atoms/cm^3. This is a condition that provides optimal sensitivity of optical magnetometers for important biomedical applications such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) or magnetocardiography (MCG) as well as in geomagnetism and space science applications. The researchers have shown that a quantum advantage using squeezed light is possible in this regime.
