AIM OF THE DOCTORATE

The concept of “One Health”, promoted by major international health organisations, is continually borne out by various health emergencies that require risk management which considers the interactions between humans and animals. Many pathogens that are dangerous to humans originate from animal reservoirs; in other words, they are zoonotic in nature. Exposure to zoonotic risks is significant in high-risk occupational activities involving animals. In this context, the veterinarian plays a key role in managing health issues. Based on these premises, the PhD programme in “Animal Health and Zoonoses” aims to train students of high professional calibre, capable of interacting with all levels of the health sector with a high degree of competence and professionalism.
These objectives will be pursued through: i) a postgraduate training programme that prioritises a broad, interdisciplinary foundation combined with advanced qualifications in the most cutting-edge fields of research and innovation; ii) an international focus, with courses and seminars led by eminent foreign researchers and opportunities for students to undertake placements abroad; iii) A broad multi- and interdisciplinary platform ensured by the convergence of strategic sectors of veterinary medical training (infectious and parasitic diseases, food safety) and a sector of medical training (occupational medicine).
