Taekwondo for peace

Durante le Olimpiadi Invernali 2018, la squadra olimpica italiana di Taekwondo è stata testimone di un incontro tra gli atleti della Repubblica Popolare Democratica di Corea (Corea del nord) e della Repubblica di Corea (Corea del sud). Le Olimpiadi Invernali 2018, che si sono volte a Seul, hanno rappresentato un’importante occasione nel lento e complesso processo di riavvicinamento delle due Coree. Anche alla luce della recente visita ufficiale del presidente della Repubblica di Corea Moon Jae-in in Vaticano, è rilevante ricordare quello che è avvenuto nel corso delle Olimpiadi invernali 2018. Una piccola storia, raccontata dai protagonisti, che illumina la mente e fa sperare che le più nobili attività dell’uomo come lo sport, l’arte e la scienza insieme all’amore per la cultura possano avere un ruolo per guidare l’umanità verso processi di pace. Questo evento è da considerare un secondo appuntamento per discutere su questioni coreane, già affrontate l’anno scorso in un importante seminario di geopolitica con Carlo Trezza (già ambasciatore a Seul negli anni scorsi) e Francesco Celentano (un giovane studioso di questioni coreane della nostra università). ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- The Peace Center of the University of Bari promotes an event dedicated to the role of sport in favouring occasions of peaceful meeting between people of even enemy nations. It is well known that the 2018 Winter Olimpics in Korea represented an important occasion for meetings between North Korean and South Korean athletes and to practice a sort of sport diplomacy. In preparation of the Olimpics, a number of diplomatic actions were brought about to allow the partecipation of North Korean athletes to Seoul games. Finally, not only North Korean athletes, but also numerous Northern musicians, dancers and singers went to the South to perform during the Winter Olympics. In this context, Taekwondo Italian athletes witnessed a convivial meeting between North Korean and South Korean taekwondo athletes. Taekwondo, a combative sport developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists, is very popular in Italy and there are excellent relationships between the Italian Taekwondo Federation and the two different Federations in Korea, WorldTaekwondo and International Taekwondo Federation, respectively for the South and the North. Angelo Cito, president of Italian Taekwondo Federation, took part to this event and he will tell us about his experience. We will discuss with him, Elio Sannicandro (Italian Olimpic Committee, CONI) and Sivio Tafuri (University Sport Center, CUS) about the opportunities given by sport, art and science to overcome political problems and favour the peace processes.
