About Us
The University of Bari Aldo Moro has been active in Taranto for over thirty years, developing teaching, research, and knowledge exchange activities that contribute to the cultural, social, and economic growth of the local community. This long-standing commitment reflects the University's mission to support the development of the Ionian area while providing high-quality education and research opportunities.
The University's presence in Taranto dates back to the early 1990s, when its first specialised programmes in marine biology and aquaculture were established. Over the years, academic provision expanded through the Ionian University Consortium (CUJ), which introduced degree programmes in Communication Sciences and Educational Sciences. The subsequent establishment of the Faculties of Law and Economics further strengthened the University's role in the region.
A major milestone was reached in 2010 with the creation of the Ionian Department of Mediterranean Legal and Economic Systems: Society, Environment, Cultures, the first—and still the only—university department based in the city of Taranto. Following Italy's University Reform (Law No. 240/2010), the Department brought together the former Faculties of Law and Economics, creating an interdisciplinary academic environment where different disciplines interact to address the complex challenges facing contemporary society.
Today, the Ionian Department is a dynamic centre for education, research, and public engagement. It connects academic excellence with creativity, social innovation, and entrepreneurship, fostering dialogue between the University, public institutions, businesses, and the wider community.
Through its broad portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes—including the PhD in Rights, Economies and Cultures of the Mediterranean—the Department equips students with the knowledge, skills, and international experience needed to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world. International mobility opportunities and placements with leading national and international organisations further enhance students' academic and professional development.
Particular attention is devoted to sustainable innovation as a driver of social, environmental, and economic progress. By promoting cross-innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, the Department has developed initiatives with a tangible impact on the local area while strengthening partnerships with public authorities, industry, and civil society.
Our vision is to create a virtuous cycle of sustainable development: attracting talented students, supporting their academic and professional growth, and encouraging them to bring their expertise back to the region, contributing to the future of Taranto and the wider Mediterranean area.
