PHILOLOGY, LITERATURES AND HISTORY OF ANTIQUITY

The course aims to provide a solid and articulated culture in the field of philology, classical languages and literatures and Greek and Roman history, as well as historical-literary and cultural phenomena related to the pagan Late Antiquity and Judeo-Christianity according to the following objectives: a) To develop a broad and concrete experience of the methods and tools of philological knowledge, acquire a specialized knowledge of Greek and Latin languages and literatures, and a vast and accurate mastery of the history of the ancient and late antique The course aims to provide a solid and articulated culture in the field of philology, classical languages and literatures and Greek and Roman history, as well as historical-literary and cultural phenomena related to the pagan Late Antiquity and Judeo-Christianity according to the following objectives: a) To develop a broad and concrete experience of the methods and tools of philological knowledge, acquire a specialized knowledge of Greek and Latin languages and literatures, and a vast and accurate mastery of the history of the ancient and late antique world, as well as the related historiography. The primary objective is also to master the processes of transmission and reception of the classics in the cultures of the medieval, modern and contemporary ages. The acquisition of knowledge will take place not only through lectures, but also through any seminars and other activities in which the active participation of students is expected. It will thus be possible to verify, in itinere and before the final exams, through tests and written papers, the level of understanding of the texts and their historical-cultural connections. b) To develop the ability to interpret and reconstruct ancient historical and literary documentation in relation to sources of different nature (archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological). c) Acquire autonomous teaching and communication skills in the field of philology, classical languages and literatures, and ancient and late antique history. Written papers or direct interventions, which, for example, address, within the seminars, the reading of ancient texts and the analysis of critical literature, can represent useful teaching methods to lead the student towards the challenging elaboration of the degree thesis. d) Develop autonomous reading and learning methods that allow further in-depth and updating experiences in relation to the disciplines related to their field of study. e) Correctly use, in written and oral form, at least one language of the European Union.
