Curriculum

Born in Torino (Italy) on April 30, 1970. Graduated in Veterinary Medicine, Marks 110/110 (top grades cum laude) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bari, Italy. PhD in 1997-2000 in “Infectious pathologies of small ruminants” at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bari, Italy. From 2000, researcher and, from 2001, Associate Professor, at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bari. From 2010, Coordinator of the PhD program “Animal Health and Zoonosis”.

Since 2003, he has received 32 grants from Ministry of Research and University and/or from Ministry of Health, including a PRIN 2008 and a PRIN 2022 project as coordinator.

In December 2006, one of his works is included in the Fast Breaking Papers, ESI Special Collections (http://www.esi-topics.com/fbp/fbp-december2006.html) that reports the works of highest interest for the scientific community. In 2008 included in the “Rotavirus Classification Working Group (RCWG)”, a permanent study group for rotavirus classification. In October 2011, J Gen Virol publishes on the cover page a photo extracted from his manuscript. In 2011, included in the international group for norovirus classification Noronet and in 2015 in the ICTV calicivirus study group. Included in 2012 in TIS list (Top Italian Scientist), first veterinarian, by VIA-Academy. In 2001 visiting researcher for 3 months at Cornell University, NY, USA.

Inl 2010 visiting researcher for 3 months at Ohio State University, Wooster, OH, USA.

From 2010 to 2017 (XXVII° to XXXII° ciclo), Coordinator (and from 2000 member of the board of professors) of the PhD Course in “Patologia e Sanità Animale”, now “Sanità Animale e Zoonosi”.

Member of the Board of Professors of the Specialization School in "Malattie Infettive, Profilassi e Polizia Veterinaria", at the Department of Medicina Veterinaria, Università of Bari.

From 2016, Member of "Comitato Tecnico Scientifico" of Istituto Zooprofilattico di Puglia e Basilicata. 

From 2018 to 2022, Coordinator of the Degree in Sicurezza degli Alimenti di Origine Animale e salute - classe LM86. 

From 2019 to 2022, and from 2022 to 2025, President of Section IV of Consiglio Superiore di Sanità'

Member of the editorial board of Arch Virol (2008-12), the Open Veterinary Journal (2007 to present), Medical sciences (2012 to present) and Virus Gene (2010 to present).

Author and/or co-author of 420 publications on international peer-reviewed journals (of which 1 on Lancet, ! on Lancet Infect Dis,  5 on J Virology, 21 on Emerg Infect Dis, 24 on J Clin Microbiol, 8 on Virology, 8 on Vaccine, 9 on J Gen Virol, 35 on Vet Microbiol). As for September 2023, his works have received a total of 17291 citations. The H index (Scopus) is 64.

Major area of research include enteric infections, including rotavirus, calicivirus and astroviruses in the areas LS6_8; LS6_13 and LS7_9.
