Jean Monnet Module: Migration, Borders and Human Rights

Jean Monnet Module: Migration, Borders and Human Rights

Overview

The Jean Monnet Module on 'Migrations, Borders, and Human Rights' is a project implemented with the European Education and Culture Executive funding granted in 2022 to the Political Science Department of the University of Bari. The module, coordinated by Professor Giuseppe Campesi, highlights EU migration and asylum policies through an interdisciplinary lens, by matching the legal and the social sciences approach.

Besides fostering the dialogue between the Academia and the civil society through public lectures, thematic seminars, and conferences with national and international experts, the project stands out for its innovative educational program, which does demand the University of Bari students’ participation in research-oriented activities.

In this regard, alongside the Jean Monnet Course on Migration, Borders, and Human Rights taught entirely in English within the Master's degree program in International Relations and European Studies (RISE) and the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics in MED (PPE) Master's program, a Jean Monnet workshop is organized every year on the topic of human rights monitoring in border areas. During the course, students take part in activities such as field visits, focus groups, and academic writing seminars and participate to the collective research drafting report which identifies the main challenges to the protection of human rights posed by current migration management practices in border areas, as well as the best practices to reduce the risk of their infringement.
