Gaetano Perchiazzi, MD, PhD lives in Bari, Italy. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at Bari University, disserting the thesis "Alveolar overdistension due to pulmonary inhomogeneity during controlled ventilation" and graduated as a specialist in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, discussing the thesis "Application of artificial intelligence methods for clinical monitoring of respiratory mechanics". He defended his doctoral thesis in Clinical Physiology, entitled "Artificial Neural Networks in the assessment of respiratory mechanics" at Uppsala University (Sweden).

According to the Guidelines of Italian Resuscitation Council and the standards of the American Heart Association, he is certified provider (among the others) of procedures of Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, Pediatric Life Support. His clinical activity is accomplished in the Intensive Care Unit of the Department of Emergency and Organ Transplant (DETO) where he works as ICU staff specialist or in the Critical Care Rescue Team at the hospital door.

He is Aggregate Professor in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Bari University, Italy.

When young researcher, he has won five annual prizes for his research activity. It is focused upon the effects of different strategies of artificial ventilation on the pulmonary mechanics of inhomogeneous lung. To attain these aims, he uses artificial intelligence methods and image analysis on lung tomography (conventional, PET-CT and Synchrotron Radiation based), both on animal models and mechanically ventilated patients.

He holds different courses for Bari University  in the  fields of Anesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy. These lessons are targeted to students of the Medical School, Nurse & Technicians Schools and Italian Navy Nurse School. He serves as a tutor and supervisor for the students who wish to prepare a graduation thesis in Anesthesia and Intensive Care.
